Bruxism and jaw pain: how to soothe it?

How do you relieve and prevent jaw pain caused by bruxism? Here are the causes and natural remedies to relax and find immediate relief.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is one of the most debated disorders of recent times. More and more people suffer from it at night, while sleeping – often without realizing it. Suffering from bruxism means that upper and lower teeth make contacts which last from five to ten seconds. This leads to neck muscles stiffening and a total occlusion of the jaws. As a consequence, tooth surfaces wear down.

Let’s see what the causes can be and how to reduce jaw pain with natural products and medicinal herbs.

Bruxism causes

Tooth grinding may be due to a psychosomatic disease. This means that it may depend on emotional factors.

Stress is one of the main causes that might affect psychosomatics, along with tension and repressed anger. In difficult or stressing periods, in order to avoid this phenomenon it is better to relax as much as possible.

Bruxism remedies

The first remedy to keep stress away is to go home and relax. Turn off your television, smarthphone, and video games. After a day at work you need to relax your mind and relieve the tension. Other distractions may increase the number of your thoughts and concerns.

To relieve jaw pain you can use relaxing herbal teas. Use plants and herbs such as chamomile, valerian and lemon balm. They have a great soothing power and gently relax muscles. You can also lightly massage this infusion on your gums.

Before going to sleep, enjoy a light relaxing temple massage. Use an essential oil such as lavender, lemon or mint for a pleasant feeling of lightness and relaxation. Massage the area with your fingertips for about three minutes.

If you still experience bruxism, always see your doctor or a specialist.
