The recipe for Christmas broccoli, an air of celebration on the tables of Christmas Eve or lunch on December 25th.
What are Christmas broccoli and how are they cooked? Their dialect name is “vruoccole ‘e fronna”, and they are a typical Neapolitan recipe of the Christmas holidays, so good that it is worth borrowing this recipe.
Tradition wants them on the tables of Neapolitans throughout December, when this vegetable is tender and fresh. They are protagonists on Christmas Eve, but they never fail even on New Year’s Eve. They accompany dishes such as cod, pizza pancakes , and go well with fish and meat dishes. Each family has its own version of course, but the result is an unusual side dish, with a fresh and sweet taste, and a tender texture. In addition to the undoubted goodness, this vegetable certainly helps to face challenging dinners. They are in fact low-calorie and rich in fiber.
Step by step, let’s see how to prepare them. The recipe is quick and easy, and there is nothing complicated about making them.
There are two methods: the first is to boil them, the second is to cook them in a pan. Let’s see both procedures .
How to cook Christmas broccoli
- First, clean the vegetables well. Wash the leaves under running water, rinse them with cold water, and eventually eliminate the spoiled or withered leaves.
- In a large pot, boil the broccoli in abundant salted water for 10-12 minutes , and drain while still al dente.
- Stop cooking by passing the broccoli under the jet of cold water, drain well and place the vegetables in a baking dish.
- Season everything with extra virgin olive oil, garlic cloves and squeezed lemon.
- Serve cold, alone or as a side dish (you can also add some chilli flakes ).
If you want to try the variant in the pot, after washing the broccoli, fry the garlic with the oil, and sauté the vegetables to flavor it. Close the pan with a lid and finish cooking slowly . After about twenty minutes they will be ready. This version is very tasty but also heavier than boiled vegetables. They are excellent served cold and can be a valid alternative to roast potatoes as a side dish for the holidays.
Christmas broccoli can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days , closed in a clean airtight container. Otherwise it is also possible to freeze them, for a maximum of three months.
