The Atkins diet has first become popular in the United States and then spread in the rest of the world. Yes, it does, but avoiding weight regain is very complicated. Not to mention the problems due to the elimination of carbohydrates…
The menu of the Atkins diet
How does the Atkins diet work? There are 4 stages which must be followed strictly. Each of these phases provides a different set of foods you can eat. Let’s see them together one at a time.
The Induction phase. This stage lasts two weeks and you must avoid all carbohydrates. Therefore, no pasta, bread, rice, but also desserts, sugar, soft drinks, jams, and packed snacks. The menu includes meat, fish, eggs, and cheese.
The Balancing your diet phase. You continue following the diet, but you can increase your carbohydrates intake, up to 5 grams per day.
The Mantaining your weight after diet phase. You have almost reached your ideal weight and your wanted silhouette. In this third phase, carbohydrates intake increases again, up to 10 grams per week.
The Lifetime maintenance phase. This is the most difficult stage, especially for all the Mediterranean diet lovers. This is the stage of maintenance, where the body, used to this new diet, should try and maintain the goals achieved. The carbohydrate intake in this phase goes from 60 to 80 grams per day, which can be difficult for people used to a certain type of diet.
Does the Atkins diet work?
This type of diet focuses on keeping the insulin level always constant. This is a diet with almost no carbohydrates, that is why the body uses fats and proteins as an alternative source of sustenance and energy. In short, with this diet, the body turns into a fat burning machine.
If you follow this type of diet, your body will produce anabolic hormones. Therefore, if matched to some exercising to increase the body mass, it can give good results in a reasonable time.
However, as we have already mentioned, it is very hard to keep the results of this diet. Moreover, the limitation or elimination of carbohydrates can also lead to problems and complications. As it burns just fat, the body produce ketone bodies, which may cause nausea, fatigue, headaches, and migraines.
In short, as we always recommend, before starting a diet see your doctor or a nutritionist.
