Does wine make you fat? Here’s how many calories there are in a glass

Let’s find out together how many calories are contained in a glass of wine, and whether the calorie intake is higher for white or red wine.

It is often said that a glass of wine at the table is good for your health, but how much truth is there in this motto? If we talk about diet, in fact, this drink is not the most suitable. Its calorie content is not indifferent, especially if you undergo harsh sacrifices to lose weight. Certainly, wine is healthier and less “dangerous” for the diet than many other drinks, primarily spirits . But it is important to pay attention to what we bring to the table, even when it comes to drinking.

Many people, especially in the process of starting a new diet , wonder if in fact wine should be completely eliminated from their diet. What we need to pay attention to, before choosing which drink to buy, is its alcohol content . In fact, the sugars contained in the grapes, during fermentation, are transformed into alcohol.

According to this simple equation, it is therefore clear that the higher the alcohol content of the wine, the higher its caloric content. Another factor to consider is the residual sugar content that “passes” through fermentation. This is especially true for sweet wines, which have a rather important sugar residue.

The calories of a glass of wine

Calculating what the caloric quantity of a glass is is not as difficult as it seems. We have seen that the alcohol content is a fundamental index. So the calories of red wine , whose alcohol content reaches up to 14%, are higher than those contained in white wine , which usually does not exceed 12 degrees.

Generally speaking, a glass of red contains up to 120 calories, while a glass of white has a maximum of 110. Dessert wines , very sweet, can instead reach an alcohol content of 15%, and in a 75 ml glass we can have up to 380 calories.

As for sparkling wine , it is necessary to distinguish between dry and sweet wines. A glass of brut can have 100 calories, while a sweet sparkling wine contains almost double it. And the calories of champagne ? This drink is much less caloric than it seems: a 100 ml glass contains about 80 kcal!
