Donut of the three kings

A cake decorated with candied fruit ideal to serve during the holiday season: here is the donut of the Three Kings.

The ciambellone dei Re Magi is our reinterpretation of the so-called French king cake – southern style, a cake widespread above all in America and which brings with it the spirit of the Christmas holidays. In fact, this particular cake is dedicated to the Three Kings and according to tradition it must necessarily be decorated using three symbolic colors: yellow, which represents power, red, which represents justice, and finally green, which represents faith.

There are many different recipes for the king cake; we thought of a classic and lemon scented donut, decorated with a sprinkling of icing sugar and candied fruit. Try to prepare this delicious Christmas cake too: it will also be delicious for breakfast or for a delicious snack!

Preparation of the soft donut with candied fruit

  1. To prepare your Magi donut, work the egg yolks with half of the sugar, then mix in the powders (flour, corn starch and yeast) with a sieve and mix well. Also add the juice of one lemon and the grated zest of both lemons, finally the seed oil.
  2. Whisk the egg whites with the remaining sugar, and once they have become white and fluffy, gently incorporate them into the rest of the mixture.
  3. At this point put the dough in a greased bowl and let it rise for about 2-3 hours in a warm and dry place (like in the oven off with the light on) and until it has doubled in volume.
  4. After the indicated time, pour everything into a donut mold previously greased or greased with a little seed oil, add the candied fruit to taste and bake at 160 ° C for about 50 minutes, checking from time to time the cooking with a toothpick.

Once ready, cover your fluffy donut with icing sugar and arrange more candied fruit, using a little imagination for the final decoration. Enjoy your meal!
