Elderflower syrup: all the properties of this scented elixir

Elderflower syrup has hundreds of benefits, other than being very refreshing and thirst-quenching. You can even do it yourself at home!
Elderflower syrup is a sweet drink with a strong scent. It has many beneficial properties for our body. You make it with elderflowers, which grow in spring. Moreover, you can DIY: you just need a few ingredients, in order to always have it at home!

Elder flowers are rich of B group vitamins, fundamental for our nervous system, to keep anxiety and stress under control and to fight fatigue. They also contain vitamins A and C, which strengthen our immune defenses and protect us against flu and other illnesses.
The antioxidants elder contains slow aging down and keep your skin healthy. This plant also has diaphoretic properties: they increase sweating, lowering the temperature in case of fever and alleviate cold and other respiratory disorders symptoms.
Moroever, elderflower syrup is a powerful diuretic. Thanks to this property, it reduces swelling and water retention. It also benefits heart, liver and the urinary tract. Finally, its anti-inflammatory action relieves cough and sore throat.
Elderflower syrup: recipe
Do you want to make this syrup at home? No problem, it is very easy and you just need a few ingredients. According to the recipe, you need 20/25 sprigs of elder flowers, 4 organic lemons, 2kg of sugar, 2 liters of water and 50gr of citric acid.

First of all, carefully clean the flowers without washing them. Then, put them in a bowl and cover with the sugar. Add water and citric acid. Finally, wash, slice and add the lemons to the rest of the ingredients.
Cover the bowl with a cotton cloth and let steep for 24-36 hours, stirring from time to time. Your syrup is ready, you just need to filter it. Cover a colander with a cotton cloth and let the liquid filter in a clean bowl. Then put it in a bottle and enjoy!
How long does elderflower syrup last?
If you store it in an airtight bottle, you can keep it for 12-16 months. If you intend to drink it over a short period of time, you can store it in a normal bottle. In this case, keep it in your fridge for 30-60 days.
