How many times do we really need to shower? Experts recommend something different than what we were expecting.

How many times a day do we need to shower? This question does not have a clear answer. Is it healthy to shower again after a walk or a workout? A shower can be relaxing, toning and refreshing, but do not overdo with it! Dermatologists said something different than what we could expect.

What experts recommend

The dermatologist José Raúl González said that bathing more than once a day and washing carefully is more harmful than do not do it at all. The reason is that showering too often destroys our skin protections, as the corneum and acid mantel.

Dr. Elaine Larson, professor at the School of Nursing at the Columbia University, agreed with him. She said that people think that showering often is a sign of hygiene, but from a bacteriological point of view, this is not the case.

A bath can make you smell nicely if you’re sweating or after the workout. However, if you want to prevent diseases, the best thing to do is probably washing your hands regularly.

How many times do we need to shower?

According to the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), the skin only bears one shower a day. Dr Brandom Mitchell, professor of dermatology at the George Washington University, also stated that from a healthy point of view, without regarding the smell or the look, it is enough showering just once or twice a week.

Too many showers: health risks

Experts have already warned that the increase of skin diseases is due to excess hygiene. Other than reducing the number of showers, it is recommended to avoid showering with too hot water, because your skin will dry too much.

It is better to use lukewarm water and a very small quantity of soap (ideally, a 5,5-6 pH soap or gel). Vegetal or natural ones are perfect. Instead, avoid chemical products which produce too much foam. These kind of shampoo and body wash dry, inflame and make your skin and hair oily.

Moreover, many products contain carcinogens, such as parabens, which make your skin more sensitive to eczemas and diseases. It is also better to avoid using sponges: use your hands!

Once you finish showering, use a towel too dry your body. Dub it on your skin, do not rub, and moisturize it with a specific cream or oil. If you can’t do without more than a shower a day, it would be better to rinse using little or no soap.

How long does the perfect shower last?

How long should we indulge under the water stream? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy, eco-friendly shower should last no more than 5 minutes.
