insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is an important pathology. Let’s find out how to recognize it and what are the treatments.

Insulin resistance is a metabolic defect that can develop for several reasons. Among the many, the most common are diabetes, obesity or metabolic syndrome . Generally speaking, we speak of insulin resistance when there is a less effective response of the cells to insulin. The latter is a hormone produced by the pancreas and essential for the metabolism of sugars. When its release does not act as it should on the cells, they are unable to absorb glucose. The pancreas , therefore, compensates by putting more into the circulation, which usually leads to weight gain and a predisposition to certain diseases such as, for example, diabetes.

Insulin resistance: the symptoms

Typically when you suffer from insulin resistance, the diagnosis comes through a whole series of symptoms that characterize this problem. Among the many, the main ones are:

– Weight gain
Somnolence
– Tiredness
– Poor ability to concentrate
– High pressure
High cholesterol (especially bad cholesterol )

These symptoms of insulin resistance, however, do not appear immediately because, as already mentioned, at the beginning the pancreas tends to compensate itself for the poor response from the cells . For this reason, it is important to pay special attention to symptoms and report them to your doctor immediately if you have any doubts about them.

In this regard, it is good to remember that the main causes that can lead to the development of this pathology are obesity, hypothyroidism, hypertension, hyperglycemia and stress.

Insulin resistance: the cure

To confirm that you have insulin resistance, there are special blood tests that are chosen by the doctor based on the patient’s situation. Once the presence of this pathology has been established, there are several strategies that can be implemented.

The first is to change the way we eat. Following a balanced diet with low sugar intake and adding physical activity , generally you have excellent results.

It will therefore be appropriate to eliminate or drastically reduce sugars, saturated fats, overly sweet fruit and refined cereals. At the same time, vegetables rich in fiber, legumes, low-sugar fruit and white and lean meats will be integrated.

If this is not enough, it is possible to resort to drugs that will be chosen by the doctor based on the severity of the situation.
