The Masala chai, also known as Masala chai tea, is a spiced Indian tea, which in recent years has become popular in the West, too. This drink is made with black tea ininfusion with a mixture of various spices (called “masala”), and string out with hot milk. In the original recipe, the Masala chai is flavoured with ginger, cinnamon and green cardamom seeds, to which you can add any other spice you like. It is obvious, therefore, that the benefits of this drink are different depending on what we decide to add in the infusion.
In general, spices enhance the health of the cardiovascular system. In addition, black tea is an excellent remedy for the stomach: it helps the digestion and accelerates the metabolism, helping you to lose weight. Also, ginger has beneficial properties for the digestive system, relieving nausea and stomach hyperacidity.

Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory powers, and is great for fighting a cold, sore throat and other flu-like symptoms. This spice is well-known for its hypertension benefit and the ability to adjust the insulin levels in the blood. Cardamom seeds are useful in case of urinary tract infections and of circulatory problems.
The Masala chai is an ayurvedic drink, often used against menstrual pains and to relax the muscles. It has antioxidant and antiseptic properties and is also a natural anti-bacterial and an excellent pain reliever product.
Masala chai recipe
There is no single recipe to make Masala chai: in India, people make it in a thousand different ways, with many spices and herbs. On the market there are bags ready to dip in boiling water to get a nice cup of Masala tea.
If you like, you can try to create your own recipe. You need black tea leaves (about 25 grams), a teaspoon of ginger, a piece of cinnamon and half a teaspoon of cardamom seeds. To this base ingredients, you can add all the spices you prefer. The most used are anise, pepper, cloves and fennel seeds.
Wait until the water boils, then leave to infuse the spice mix for about 15 minutes. Remove the pot from the flame and add the black tea leaves for 2-3 minutes. Now, filter it and add hot milk. If you prefer a sweet drink, you can add a teaspoon of sugar or other sweeteners.
