Nocturia: when you often need to pee at night

If you often wake up in the middle of the night to pee, you may suffer from nocturia. Here some precautions to solve the problem.

The term nocturia indicates a disorder that wakes you up at night one or more times for voiding. This need is so strong it wakes you up. Usually, we should be able to sleep 6/8 hours without needing to pee.

Of course, it can happen that you need to go to the bathroom suddenly in the middle of the night: if you have drunk a lot in the evening, you may need to pee earlier than usual. It becomes a problem if you can’t have a normal night of sleep and influence you daily life.

Nocturia, or having to pee too often: causes

Nocturia can be the symptom for a more serious problem or just the consequence of incorrect habits. For this reason, it is very important to try and understand its causes, in order to ask your doctor for help if necessary.

The main causes of nocturia are:

Urinary tract disorders (cystitis, prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer);

– Urinary incontincence or a bladder disfunction;

– Neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease);

Type 1 or 2 diabetes;

– Hypertension;

– Congestive heart failure;



– Stress or anxiety;

-Some medicines (diuretics, antihypertensive, cardiotonic ones);

– Drinking too much before going to bed.

Nocturia: remedies

In order to understand if you actually suffer forom this disorder, it is fundamental to keep a journal where you will record the main events: liquids taken and urination frequency, both in the morning and at night.

If this disorder is caused by a disease, it is of course necessary to act on it to eliminate nocturia. Sometimes, you just need to change your habits to relieve the problem.

For example, it is important not to drink anything in the hours before going to bed. You should also give up on alcohol and coffee during the evening and go to the bathroom before going to bed.
