The Scarsdale diet is a particular food regime created in the 1970s by dr. Tarnower, an American cardiologist. This plan makes people lose as much as 500 g per day.

This slimming diet provides 800 calories per day (or maximum 1000). On  one hand, it guarantees quick and immediate results, but at the same time they are difficult to keep. Moreover, there are other cons to consider.

How the Scarsdale diet works: menu

As we have said, this diet is based on consuming around 800/1000 calories a day, divided into 3 main meals, without snacks. Moreover, you must limit fats, especially in the seasonings, and drink two litres of water a day.

With regard to foods, seasonings, fats, refined flours, white bread, sugars, fatty cheeses, meats, soft drinks, and alcohol are forbidden.

You can follow this diet for 4 weeks, 2 of weight loss and 2 of stabilization. Let’s see a complete Scarsdale diet menu:

First day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: white meat, vegetables
Dinner: Fish, vegetables, 1 fruit

Second day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: mixed salad, 1 fruit
Dinner: fish or meat and steamed vegetables, 1 fruit

Third day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: fruit salad
Dinner: white meat, vegetables, 1 fruit

Fourth day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: 1 hard boiled egg, ricotta or other low-fat cheese, vegetables
Dinner: meat or fish, vegetables

Fifth day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: white meat, vegetables
Dinner: fish, vegetables, 1 fruit

Sixth day

Breakfast: coffee without sugar, 1 fruit, 1 wholewheat toast
Lunch: low-fat cheese, cooked vegetables
Dinner: fish or meat, vegetables, 1 fruit

Seventh day

Scarsdale diet: stabilization phase

During this phase, which lasts 2 weeks, you mut follow these simple rules:

  • Eat no more than 3 slices of wholemeal bread per day;
  • Drink tea and coffee without sugar;
  • Do not consume sweets, soft drinks and deep-fried foods;
  • Eat low-fat cheeses and for a maximum of two times a week;

The forbidden foods are the one not allowed in the slimming phase of the diet. Therefore, no sweets, fat seasonings, cured meats, fat cheeses, sugars of all kinds, butter and oil.

Instead, milk, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, legumes are allowed. Moreover, you can also have one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon snack, consisting of fruit, tea, 1 low-fat yogurt or a slice of wholemeal bread with ham.

Does the Scarsadale doet work?

As we have said, this diet guarantees a quick weight loss, but once you finish following the diet, it is very difficult to keep your silhouette.

In addition, the initial loss is also based on fluid loss and the reduction of muscle mass. Moroever, during the slimming period, there is no balance, as carbohydrates are practically absent.
