For many years the official IBA cocktail, the screwdriver is based on vodka and orange juice. Let’s find out ingredients and doses to prepare it.
Making homemade cocktails often requires a well-stocked wet bar, unless you decide to make the screwdriver. This vodka-based cocktail is prepared with only two ingredients : vodka, in fact, and orange juice. It was an official IBA cocktail from 1986 to 2020 but its birth seems to date back a few years earlier.
We are in the 1950s, in a bar of the Park Hotel in New York , a place where Turkish secret agents refugees from the Balkans and American engineers usually meet. They are the ones who invented the screwdriver cocktail for the first time by combining vodka with canned orange juice and mixing everything with what they had available: a screwdriver. Here then explains the origin of the name. Not everyone knows that the screwdriver has given rise to another IBA cocktail, the Harvey Wallbanger which includes, in addition to the two classic ingredients, the addition of the Giuliano liqueur, similar in taste to the Strega. So let’s see how to prepare the screwdriver with official ingredients and doses.
How to prepare the screwdriver cocktail with the official recipe
- The preparation is really simple and does not require the use of a mixer or anything else. Simply fill a tumbler-like glass with ice.
- Then pour in the vodka and orange juice and mix with a straw.
- Serve garnished with a slice of orange.
As you can see, the preparation is really simple, perfect if you are a beginner. We recommend that you also take a look at the other cocktails with vodka : they are perfect for an evening with friends.
As with all cocktails, storage is also not recommended in this case: prepare it and enjoy it on the spot .
