Swollen tongue, also known as Glossitis, is a fairly common problem that can cause discomfort. The best known are the difficulties in eating or speaking . The origin of the swollen tongue can be different in that it can be caused by infections or inflammations . However, the consequences of this discomfort can also be very serious, such as the disappearance of the taste buds. In fact, very pronounced swellings could cover the small protrusions present on the surface of our tongue.
In other cases this problem can affect the entire surface, or parts of the tongue, causing continuous burning or numbness . So let’s see what the symptoms and remedies of the swollen tongue are.
Symptoms of the swollen tongue
The swollen tongue, in addition to being a serious problem, can also indicate other more serious pathologies , such as allergies . In fact, glossitis, if associated with other symptoms such as rashes or swelling on the lips, tongue and skin, can be the result of a mild allergic reaction.

In other cases the causes of the swollen tongue are other and quite serious. We are referring to malnutrition, with a specific deficiency of Vitamins B3 and B12 , a tongue infection, injury, trauma or irritation.
In the latter case, we can say that it is the consumption of too hot or spicy foods, cigarettes and alcohol that causes swelling. The underlying causes of the swollen tongue are therefore many, and in some cases they can even be more serious as a tumor. This is why it is important to know how to deal with this problem.
Natural remedies for swollen tongue
As we have already said, the swollen tongue can create many inconveniences, starting from the difficulty in eating or speaking. To relieve pain and discomfort, however, there are several methods, some of which provide completely natural treatments. In general, however, we can say that taking liquid or partially solid foods can already be a good start. In fact, in this way it is possible to avoid the difficulties of chewing and swallowing normally caused by the swollen tongue.
Also, in general, the change of diet relaxes the tongue. Secondly it can be useful to prepare a mixture with mint leaves, anise or rosemary and boiling water. Use the solution as a mouthwash and rinse.
Thanks to the medicinal characteristics of these herbs it will be possible to relieve swelling and have a fresher breath. Alternatively, you can also dissolve a teaspoon of turmeric in water , gargling at least de times a day.
This will help decrease swelling of the tongue. Furthermore, it can be useful not to eat foods that can fuel inflammation, and therefore salty, bitter or particularly tasty foods . In any case, the fundamental and most important resource is water.
In fact, in order not to run the risk of a swollen tongue, it is advisable to drink a lot of water , which will facilitate the overcoming of this problem.
