The early months of pregnancy are often difficult. Let’s see its most common symptoms  and what precautions to take for the health of the mother and the child.

The early months of pregnancy are very delicate and often difficult, especially it is the first pregnancy, because there can be many doubts. In order for everything to go smoothly, you need to understand if you are pregnant from the first symptoms and have beta-hCG analysis and a gynecological examination.

The gynecologist will then follow the future mother during the nine months. Let’s see what are the first symptoms of pregnancy and what precautions to take to ensure the health of both mother and child.

Symptoms of the first months of pregnancy

primi mesi di gravidanza

The first symptoms of pregnancy are different from woman to woman, in some cases may even not appear at all. Usually, in the first month the symptoms may let yout think your period is coming. However, if you skip it, after a week from the expected date you can already have a pregnancy test.

The most common symptoms for pregnancy are nausea, tiredness, breast tension, strong sensitivity to smells, sleepiness, frequent need of peeing, lower abdominal pain and pinkish vaginal discharge. These leaks usually indicate the embryo implantation in the uterus: they are called spotting. However, when you think you are pregnant or you know it for sure, if you experience spotting or pain it is better to see your gynecologist.

Precautions in the early months of pregnancy

The first three months of pregnancy are the most delicate ones. About 15% of all pregnancies stops spontaneously in this period. To prevent that, it is good to take some small precautions. First of all, you need to see regularly your gynaecologist and ask what to do to let everything go smoothly.

You need to avoid physical efforts. You need to rest and learn to feel your body and respect its needs. It is important to stop smoking, to follow a healthy diet and to take supplements of folic acid in order to avoid deformities.

Working in the first few months of pregnancy

The mandatory maternity leave lasts 5 months, 2 months before delivery and 3 months after. Alternatively, you can ask for a month of leave before the birth date and 4 months after.

In the first three months of pregnancy, instead, you can not ask for a maternity leave, unless your pregnancy is at risk and your doctor prescribes it.

If you have a sedentary job that does not require physical efforts, in general there is no risk. However, it is always good to remember that you need to move and get up from your chair at least every two or three hours.
