The Museo dell’Etna in Viagrande is set to host a remarkable event celebrating the Mediterranean Diet, an essential part of cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The exhibition, titled “Mediterranean Diet: Health, Environment, and Flavors of Sicily,” offers an interactive experience that combines history, tradition, and sustainability. This event aims to educate visitors on the significance of the Mediterranean Diet through immersive displays and activities, highlighting the authentic Sicilian flavors and promoting healthy and environmentally friendly eating habits.

The Mediterranean Diet: A UNESCO Cultural Heritage

Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage since November 16, 2010, the Mediterranean Diet is more than just a dietary regimen. It represents a lifestyle that encompasses agriculture, cooking, and responsible food consumption. This way of living embraces the connection with the land and sea, advocating for a healthy and sustainable diet. The exhibition at the Museo dell’Etna seeks to convey these values through a sensory journey that emphasizes traditional Sicilian tastes and the importance of a balanced and environmentally conscious diet.

A Unique Educational Experience at Museo dell’Etna

As the largest volcanological museum in Italy, the Museo dell’Etna provides a fitting backdrop for this innovative exhibition. Scheduled to run from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, the event will host more than 100 primary school students, offering them a unique educational experience. Through guided tours and “Food Education” workshops, the exhibition aims to engage young minds, fostering curiosity and awareness about their dietary choices. The interactive nature of the exhibition allows children to learn through hands-on activities and immersive experiences.

Ettore Barbagallo, the promoter and president of the Friends of the Earth Sicily Association, emphasized that the exhibition space goes beyond traditional informational panels. It features an immersive room that engages all the senses, using videos, sounds, and scenography to explore Sicily’s cultural and natural richness. Attractions like a high-tech food pyramid and interactive games provide a fun and educational way to delve into topics such as biodiversity and waste reduction, making learning an enjoyable experience.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Friends of the Earth – Club dell’Etna Association and Latte Stella, a company actively promoting the Mediterranean Diet. By leveraging advanced technologies, the exhibition offers an engaging experience that encourages visitors to reflect on the importance of food sustainability and health. The event emphasizes the significance of consuming local products, featuring fresh vegetables, nutritious legumes, bluefish, and olive oil to raise awareness about nature’s bounty and environmental respect.
