The Venoscreen service will be available to those who request it throughout the month of May.

This is a screening to check the condition of varicose veins. The initiative is proposed by Prodeco Pharma's Women's Friend and is active in all pharmacies, herbalist's shops and parapharmacies that have joined the network.

The objective aims to raise awareness of prevention against a common problem, which occurs in old age and can have origins from wrong behavior or genetics.

Unfortunately, varicose veins are not always just an aesthetic problem. Sometimes they are painful and can compromise the performance of normal daily activities. Therefore, a much more free screening can help reduce the problem before it can lead to a more serious pathology.

How varicose veins form

Varicose veins are a condition that occurs in men and women, especially after the age of fifty. They occur when the valves in the veins become damaged , causing blood to pool in the veins.

This pooling of blood causes the veins to become swollen, twisted, and enlarged . Although varicose veins can occur anywhere on the body, they are most commonly found in the legs.

The exact cause of varicose veins is not fully known. However, there are several factors that combine to increase the risk of developing this condition. These include age, gender, family history, pregnancy, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

As we age, the valves in the veins weaken and become less efficient, which promotes the formation of varicose veins. Specifically, women are more likely to develop varicose veins than men, due to hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and menopause.

Even an overweight man who leads a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of developing varicose veins. The reason is obvious: skin fat puts extra pressure on the veins in the legs.

Widespread or localized pain can be a sign of a varicose vein problem

The symptoms of varicose veins can vary from person to person. Some people may experience no symptoms at all , while others may experience a range of bothersome symptoms.

In any case there are annoyances common to all people. In fact, varicose veins cause swelling of the legs , which can be generalized or localized, and can also affect the well-being of the feet.

Other symptoms that add to the pain are a sense of full-blown heaviness in the legs , a feeling of tension or tightness in the legs. But above all the most evident symptom is the protrusion of the veins, which appear purple and bluish in color.

Some people may also feel itching or burning around the affected veins. In severe cases, varicose veins can cause skin changes around the affected area, such as discoloration, dryness, or ulcers.

A screening for varicose veins, as a form of prevention, can avoid the formation of this problem, especially when it is possible to intervene in the correction of wrong behaviors that have been perpetrated over time.
