Restless Legs Syndrome: Symptoms and Treatment
Restless Legs Syndrome is a lifelong problem that can affect anyone and can come in many forms. Here’s what you need to know about it.
When we talk about restless legs syndrome, we mean a discomfort in the legs that can occur at any time but which has a greater incidence at night. The sensation is in fact that of having nervous legs and in need of moving. Which when it reaches a certain frequency or occurs in a rather strong entity can cause important discomfort to those who suffer from it.
Restless Legs Syndrome: Causes
To date, tired legs syndrome has not yet been fully understood. For this reason, the causes are only hypothetical.
According to some neurologists , the problem is linked to dopamine and a lack of it.
However, there are studies that have shown that the disease also occurs in conjunction with iron anemia, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc …
Furthermore, it appears that at least one in five women experience this condition during pregnancy. Going to the symptoms, the most common are:
– Legs that pull
– Chills down the legs
– Burning sensation
– Hot legs at night
– Itching
– Pain in the legs
These symptoms tend to amplify during the night, causing sleep problems which then affect everyday life. For this reason it is very important never to underestimate the problem.
Restless legs: the remedies
Unfortunately, there is almost no therapy for restless legs syndrome.
As already mentioned, some doctors, when faced with really complex situations, try to supplement dopamine or iron (in case of anemia). However, these remedies are not always enough to solve the problem.
More generally, it is recommended to follow a healthy lifestyle, try to sleep well, avoid alcohol or caffeine in the evening, stop smoking and exercise.
During nocturnal attacks, however, it seems that for restless legs syndrome, the most suitable therapy is to carry out massages or hot baths and to do stretching or hot and cold compresses.
In any case, it is good not to live this problem in silence but to consult a doctor to try to understand the personal causes (sometimes even taking certain drugs can cause the problem) and find the relative solutions.
