The gift before gifts: the Advent calendar

Once the summer is over, the first big holiday we think about is Christmas, and it is therefore no coincidence that we start thinking about gift ideas for the holidays several months in advance.

There are types of gifts which, in order to make the most of them, must be given before the arrival of December: the reference is obviously to Advent calendars. Let's find out together what it is and the most interesting variations to the traditional version.

What is an Advent calendar?

The concept of the Advent calendar arrived in Italy for so many years that it can be considered well rooted in our Christmas habits, despite it being a tradition of Germanic culture. In its traditional guise, the Advent calendar is nothing more than a cardboard box with 24 windows, inside each of which a chocolate or sweet is kept.

Starting from December 1st, children can open a window a day and taste the chocolate they find, starting a sweet journey (in every sense) until Christmas day. The idea behind the Advent calendar is as simple as it is ingenious, and it is therefore normal that in recent years it has also had other types of variations.

More and more companies in recent times have created their own Advent calendar, replacing traditional chocolates with their own products and making them a typical gift idea for the holidays. If tradition dictates that Christmas gifts are unwrapped starting from midnight on December 25th, why give an Advent calendar which, by its very nature, can be used between December 1st and 24th? In fact this gift is designed, as the name suggests, for the Advent period, and therefore for Christmas purists it cannot be a gift to unwrap under the tree.

The truth is that it is used to give gifts to all those people you love but who you won't have the opportunity to meet for Christmas.
