Caramelized chestnuts

caramelized chestnuts

Caramelized chestnuts are delicious to be enjoyed cold, at the end of a meal together with coffee. Here is the recipe with just 3 ingredients.

Impossible to resist chestnuts. When autumn arrives, just the idea of enjoying them while walking through the streets of the center or sitting comfortably on the sofa is comforting. But there is a recipe that will make this fruit even more delicious: caramelized chestnuts. Perfect both to enjoy at the end of a meal and to enrich desserts , they are much simpler (and cheaper) than marron glacé.

First you will have to cook the chestnuts . The choice is yours whether to opt for the oven, the air fryer, the pan or even boil. The important thing is that they are whole and without the skin . They are then placed in a pan with the sugar and water and the caramel is prepared, flavoring it if desired. We preferred to leave it neutral so as to fully savor the chestnuts.

How to prepare the caramelized chestnuts recipe

  1. First, cook the chestnuts. Cut them with a cut along the rounded part, taking care not to damage the pulp.
  2. Cook the chestnuts following the method you prefer. We put them in the oven at 220°C for 20 minutes , then peeled them while they were still hot.
  3. Pour the sugar and water into a pan then add the chestnuts. Cook everything over medium heat. You will notice that the sugar will change consistency several times, becoming sandy at first (if you stop here you will have praline chestnuts) and then starting to melt.
  4. When the caramel has taken on an amber consistency it is ready. Transfer the chestnuts onto a sheet of baking paper , spacing them apart, and leave to air dry for 30 minutes .

As mentioned in the introduction, caramelized chestnuts can be flavored to taste . The flavors that go best with this autumn ingredient are vanilla , cinnamon and rum. Enjoyed cold, they are an excellent dessert at the end of a meal, to be enjoyed with coffee. They are also perfect for becoming gastronomic gifts : just put them in the appropriate food bags and with a bow they will make you look great.

Another way to preserve them is to prepare chestnuts in syrup : they are delicious with ice cream!

Conservation

Caramelized chestnuts will keep for up to a month in a tin box.
