Gratin fennel

Baked fennel au gratin with béchamel sauce is a side dish that everyone can agree on. Here is our recipe.

Fennel and béchamel: it doesn't take much to prepare a tasty and tasty side dish perfect for dinner . Furthermore, gratin fennel can be served both as a side dish and as a main dish, given the richness of the ingredients.

If you prefer, for a perfect gratin , you can sprinkle the surface of the fennel and bechamel with parmesan or grated bread. The fennel with bechamel prepared following this recipe can also be prepared in advance and baked just before sitting down to the table. Let's see all the steps.

Preparation

How to prepare the recipe for fennel au gratin with bechamel

Start by cleaning the fennel : remove the hardest external part, the stems and, after dividing them in half, also the central core. Wash them well under cold running water, then dry them and cut them into wedges.

Cook them in abundant salted water for 10 minutes , then drain them with a slotted spoon and keep them aside.

In the meantime, prepare the béchamel sauce . Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the flour and toast everything until it turns hazelnut coloured. Once the roux is ready, slowly pour in the milk , stirring with a whisk to prevent the formation of lumps, and cook over medium heat until it thickens. It will take about 10 minutes . Finally, flavor with nutmeg and season with salt .

Butter or line a baking dish with baking paper and pour about 1/3 of the béchamel sauce. Then arrange the fennel and cover them with the remaining bechamel. Complete with the parmesan and cook in a preheated oven at 190°C for 30 minutes .

Once cooked, remove the fennel dish from the oven and leave to cool for a few moments before serving.

We made the homemade béchamel but if you want you can use the ready-made one or choose one that best suits your diet such as the one without butter . If, however, you prefer to opt for gratinated fennel without bechamel then we recommend our air fryer recipe .

Conservation

Baked fennel au gratin will keep for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. To enjoy them at their best, reheat them before bringing them to the table.
