Homemade crackers recipe

Cracker

Delicious crunchy sheets of pasta, ideal as a snack or for an aperitif: here is the recipe for making crackers!

Making crackers is really easier said than done. A few simple ingredients are enough to obtain crunchy pastries that have nothing to envy of the well-known packaged products. Preparing bread, focaccia, breadsticks and other foods of this type is always a great satisfaction and even in this case you can give free rein to your imagination . These fragrant savory pastries are excellent plain, but nothing stops you from flavoring them as you prefer.

Any ideas? You can enrich the surface or directly the dough with chopped aromatic herbs , chopped olives, pepper, poppy or sunflower seeds. Are you ready to get your hands dirty?

Homemade crackers

Preparing homemade crackers

  1. Dissolve the yeast in water at room temperature.
  2. Pour the flour into a fairly large bowl, make a fountain shape by making a hole in the center then add the water, salt and olive oil.
  3. Knead with your hands until you obtain a soft, smooth and compact dough.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise for about 2 hours .
  5. After this time, roll out the dough with a rolling pin or with a pasta machine until you have a sheet approximately 1-2 mm thick .
  6. With biscuit molds or a simple one with a wheel, make crackers by making the shapes you prefer. Place the pasta sheets on a baking tray covered with baking paper.
  7. If you don't want air bubbles to form during cooking, we recommend pricking the pasta, otherwise you can also leave them rustic.
  8. Brush the surface with a thin layer of water and salt and bake at 200°C for 12 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature.

This is the basic recipe, then you can flavor them as you prefer: adding aromatic herbs, spices or, why not, a pinch of tomato paste to the mixture. Or, why not, even a version with seeds .

Quick crackers without yeast

It is also possible to prepare a quicker version of this crunchy snack, namely unleavened crackers. To prepare them you will simply have to omit the yeast and, once the smooth dough has been formed, just let the dough rest for 30 minutes and then move on to preparing and cooking them.

So as not to miss a single step, here is a video recipe of this second version, this time flavored with thyme:

Conservation

Store these savory snacks for about 4-5 days in a paper bag or in a special container with a lid. We do not recommend freezing in the freezer.
