Homemade watermelon jam: a delicious preserve
Excellent spread on bread in the morning or used to fill your pies, watermelon jam is really delicious.
There is nothing better than a jam to preserve the taste of summer fruit for the winter. Who knows why, however, watermelon jam is so little known. After all, it is a fruit that is really only found for limited periods and being able to appreciate its flavor out of season would be a really great thing.
This is why we have worked hard to prepare watermelon jam, really very simple and within everyone's reach . The necessary ingredients, as always, are ripe and sweet fruit, clearly in season, lemon juice and sugar. Very little of the latter will be enough, especially when compared to other jams, precisely because watermelon must be very sweet in itself.
How to prepare watermelon jam recipe
- First, remove the seeds and peel from the watermelon and cut the pulp into chunks. Transfer it to a colander and let it drain for at least an hour.
- Then transfer it to a saucepan filled with sugar and lemon juice and cook over low heat without a lid for about 40 minutes , stirring frequently.
- Then blend with the immersion mixer and transfer into sterilized glass jars . Close with a new cap, turn upside down and leave to cool until the vacuum is formed.
Watermelon peel jam
This unusual recipe is perfect if you don't want to throw away (almost) any of this fruit. To prepare it, get some watermelon peel and remove the green part . In fact, we are going to use only the white one. After cutting it into small cubes, transfer it to a saucepan together with an equal weight of sugar . We advise you to also add an aroma such as a vanilla bean or lemon zest.
Put on the heat and cook for 2 hours , stirring occasionally and removing the foam if it forms. If you like, you can pass everything through a vegetable mill before placing it in sterilized jars. Keep in mind that it will be quite liquid but there is no need to worry as it will tend to solidify as it cools. Let the jars cool upside down before putting them in the pantry.
storage
Watermelon jam can be kept in the pantry for up to a year . Once opened, however, it should be placed in the refrigerator and consumed within a couple of weeks.
