Protein waffles
Let's find out how to prepare protein waffles, a healthy alternative for breakfast, ideal for enriching with yogurt, fruit or jams.
Defining protein foods as a trend is an understatement although every day we are bombarded by advertisements for high-protein foods, often ultra-refined. There is nothing wrong with wanting to increase the amount of protein in your diet , especially if you are an athlete. However, it is always better to opt for lightly processed foods , even better if homemade with healthy ingredients. This is why we'll reveal how to prepare protein waffles perfect for breakfast .
You can serve them with spreads, jams, yogurt and fresh fruit (they are amazing with berries) or with our dried fruit butters , which are also rich in proteins and good fats. To make them you need a few ingredients and a waffle iron . Alternatively, you can cook them in the oven in the air fryer in the appropriate molds, or turn them into pancakes.
Preparation
How to prepare protein waffles recipe
First, combine the egg white , milk and Greek yogurt in a bowl and beat quickly with a whisk.
Add the oat flour (you can prepare it yourself by blending some oat flakes until they are reduced to powder) and the yeast and mix to obtain a thick and homogeneous batter. If you like, you can add a spoonful of sugar or a few drops of sweetener.
Oil the waffle iron and heat it well according to the instructions. Then pour as much dough as needed to fill it (do not exceed because it will tend to swell during cooking) and close. The cooking time varies from device to device but usually does not exceed 5 minutes . The waffles will be ready when they release effortlessly from the mold.
Transfer them to a plate, decorate them as you like and enjoy them while they are still hot.
Here is a short video with a recipe similar to ours. We preferred not to add protein powder to make the recipe easy to replicate even for those who do not have this ingredient available. If you want, you can add 20 g and increase the spoons of milk to 4 .
As mentioned, you can use the same dough to make delicious pancakes, as we did in the protein pancakes recipe.
To cook protein waffles in the oven, equip yourself with silicone waffle molds, pour in the mixture (it is not necessary to oil them) and cook them at 180°C for 20 minutes. In an air fryer, 12 minutes at 180°C will suffice.
Ideas for serving them
Just like with pancakes, you're spoiled for choice. Here are some ideas for enjoying protein waffles for breakfast:
- Yogurt (Greek or vegetable) of the flavor you prefer, fresh fruit and maple syrup (or honey);
- Hazelnut and coconut flakes spreadable cream;
- Peanut butter and sliced banana;
- Jam or yogurt and jam;
- Fresh fruit and tahini sauce.
Conservation
The waffles will keep for a couple of days in a plastic bag. We recommend reheating them (even in the microwave) before enjoying them.
