The most beautiful and magical period of the year has begun and should be celebrated properly. To do this, there is no better way than gathering around the table with family and friends. Whether for lunch or dinner, the dishes must always be impeccable. One of the best ideas that we propose for this year is the savory Christmas log: covered with lots of Philadelphia , it has the shape of a small piece of white, snow-covered log .
The tastiest surprise, however, lies inside. The filling is made from genuine products and has an incredible flavour. To fill it you can use a variety of ingredients, but today we offer you the version with capricciosa salad , lettuce , ham and little else. Furthermore, it is very easy to prepare and requires no cooking . Let's start the celebrations and let's get to the kitchen!
Ingredients
For the savory log
- Bread for sandwiches – 4 long slices
- Philadelphia – 300 g
- Mayonnaise – 4 tablespoons
- Cooked ham – 100 g
- Sliced cheese – 200 g
- Lettuce – 4 leaves
Preparation
How to prepare the savory yule log recipe
On a work surface, spread a sheet of cling film. On top of it, arrange the slices of white sandwich bread, overlapping along the long side and a couple of centimetres. Roll them out with a rolling pin to thin them and join them.
Along the entire pastry, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise . Then, cover with the slices of ham, those of cheese and finally the lettuce.
Using the cling film, wrap the sheet of white bread around the long side. Close the candy wrapper tightly, tightening it a little so that everything comes together and transfer to the refrigerator for at least 2 hours .
With a diagonal cut about 1/3 of the length, obtain what will be the lateral branch and position it well close to the trunk.
Cream the Philadelphia and cover the outside of the trunk. For decorations, use a fork to create grooves in the bark. Decorate as you like and serve.
Variants
Never was an appetizer more versatile than the savory log. Among the most popular versions is the one with salmon : in this case, immediately after the mayonnaise, cover with slices of smoked salmon and roll up tightly. If you want, you can add a row of avocado slices which, when rolled, will remain in the center.
We also love the tuna variant which is obtained by mixing 200 g of drained tuna with 100 g of mayonnaise. If you like, you can add chopped capers and olives . Spread on the slices of bread, distribute a handful of rocket and roll up.
You can also opt for different ingredients for the external covering . Ricotta, Philadelphia, robiola and mascarpone are equally good, even mixed together. The decoration , however, can be limited to the grooves or be richer with rosemary needles, pink pepper berries or pomegranate seeds.
Conservation
This savory yule log is perfect for enriching the table during the holiday period. However, you can prepare it all year round and whenever you feel like it, because it is simple to make. It can also be kept in the fridge for a maximum of 2 days , always covered with transparent film .
