Born in Sukhumi – a town in Georgia – on March 25, 1981 under the sign of Aries, Demna Gvasalia has known the horrors of war from an early age.

Due to the civil war that broke out in the country he was forced to flee with his mother, brothers and grandmother. After crossing the Caucasus mountains, he first settled in Tbilisi, then moved to Ukraine and Russia to stop permanently in Düsseldorf.

To satisfy the family's requests, he enrolled in International Economics at the Tbilisi State University and, once he arrived in Germany, he started working in the financial sector .

The interest in fashion, however, was too strong and, after leaving his job, Demna Gvasalia flew to Belgium, graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and obtained the first important positions in the world of fashion. .

Demna Gvasalia's career

Shortly after graduating, the young designer became Martin Margiela's assistant at the homonymous maison and, in 2012, he joined the Parisian luxury fashion house: Louis Vuitton.

2014 was the year of change: Demna Gvasalia founded her own brand Vetements together with her brother Gouran, stylist Lotta Vulkova and a group of friends. The label quickly became synonymous with non-conformism and attracted the attention of the media and newspapers, which began to praise the Georgian designer for his insights.

In 2015, the fashion designer was chosen as the creative director of Balenciaga and brought a breath of modernity to the historic fashion house by launching the reinterpretation of the Ikea shopper – made of genuine leather and sold at a cost of 1,800 euros – and sneakers Triple S inspired by those of the nineties.

Demna Gvasalia's private life

Demna Gvasalia met her husband, musician Loïk Gomez , aka BFRND, in 2016, behind the scenes of a fashion show in London.

“I met Demna in March 2016 in London, it was love at first sight and we got married a year later in Switzerland,” the designer's partner told Numéro magazine.

Their relationship, in addition to being sentimental, has also turned into a working one: Demna and Loïk work together for Balenciaga.
