What is Christmas broccoli and how is it cooked? Their name in dialect is “vruoccole 'e fronna”, and they are a Neapolitan recipe typical of Christmas holidays, so good that it is worth borrowing this recipe.

Tradition wants them on the tables of Neapolitans throughout December, a time when this vegetable is tender and fresh. They are protagonists on Christmas Eve, but they are never missing on New Year's Eve either. They accompany dishes such as cod, pizza fritters , and pair with fish and meat dishes.

Each family has its own version of course, but the result is an unusual side dish, with a fresh and sweet taste, and a tender texture. In addition to its undoubted goodness, this vegetable certainly helps you tackle busy dinners. They are in fact low-calorie and rich in fibre.

Step by step, let's see how to prepare them. The recipe is simple and quick, and making them is not complicated at all.
There are two methods: the first is to boil them, the second is to cook them in a pan. Let's see both procedures .

  • Broccoli from Campania – 2 kg
  • Extra virgin olive oil – to taste
  • Garlic cloves – 4
  • Lemon – 1
  • Chili pepper – to taste

Preparation

How to cook Christmas broccoli

First, clean the vegetables carefully. Wash the leaves under running water, rinse them with cold water and remove any damaged or wilted leaves.

In a large pot, boil the broccoli in plenty of salted water for 10-12 minutes , and drain while still al dente.

Stop cooking by passing the broccoli under cold water. Drain them carefully and place them in a baking dish.

Season everything with extra virgin olive oil, garlic cloves and fresh lemon juice.

Serve cold, alone or as an accompaniment. For an extra touch, you can add some chilli flakes.

If you want to try the pan-cooked variant, after washing the broccoli, fry the garlic in the oil, and sauté the vegetables to add flavour. Close the pan with a lid and finish cooking slowly . After about twenty minutes they will be ready.

This version is very tasty but is also heavier than boiled vegetables. They are excellent served cold and can be a valid alternative to roast potatoes as a side dish for parties.

Conservation

Christmas broccoli can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days , closed in a clean airtight container. Otherwise you can also freeze them for a maximum of three months.
