The mulberry granita is a traditional Sicilian recipe prepared, as the name suggests, with mulberries . Today this fruit is difficult to find if not grown in the wild but if you have the opportunity to get it you should definitely try this recipe.
The mulberry granita is excellent on its own , enjoyed by the glass, but if you want to feel like genuine Sicilians then you just have to put it inside the famous brioche with tuppo . The preparation is really very simple and follows that of any granita so let's see together how to prepare this typical product.
How to prepare the mulberry granita recipe
- First, get some very ripe mulberries and rinse them gently under running water. Then transfer them to a food processor and blend them until you get a sauce. This will be filtered in a fine mesh sieve to remove all the seeds.
- Separately, in a pot, boil water and sugar then let it cool.
- Add the mulberry sauce and lemon juice and mix well.
- At this point, if you have an ice cream maker , so much the better of it: put the liquid in the container, operate the shovel and let it run for about an hour or until the granita has reached its characteristic consistency. If you don't have it, pour it all into a low, wide container, put it in the freezer and stir every 30 minutes for the next 3-4 hours , until you reach the right consistency.
Serve the granita with the brioche with the tuppo and you won't regret it!
storage
The mulberry granita can be kept in the freezer for a couple of months . However, keep in mind that it will tend to become a single block of ice so before consuming it it is necessary to bring it back to room temperature for the time necessary to obtain a mixable consistency.
