Sleep talking is the utterance of words or phrases during sleep, usually under the impression of a lively emotional state: causes and symptoms.

Sleep talking is a disorder that can cause a lot of embarrassment, especially in those who experience it. The reason? Simple: upon awakening they remember absolutely nothing. Let's see what are the causes, symptoms and the most effective treatment of sleep talking.

Sleep Talking: Causes and Symptoms

Sleep talking, technically somniloquy , involves uttering words or phrases while asleep. In the eyes of those who observe it, since those who experience it have no memory of it, it does not appear as a constructed dialogue, but as a real conversation, complete with emotional involvement. It is an episodic sleep disorder, which sees the person concerned uttering a nonsense speech, which can be longer or shorter. There may be periods in which the problem is more frequent and others in which it is completely absent.

Sleep talking is not related to specific causes , but can usually be triggered by sleepwalking, bruxism or nightmares. There are, however, factors that can influence sleep talking: stress, anxiety, tension, sleep apnea , lack of rest and fever. Furthermore, according to some research, there could also be a hand in genetics.

Usually, this disorder is more common in children, but it can also occur in adults. Adults and children, however, have the same symptoms , i.e. pronouncing disconnected sentences while resting. Rarely, those who watch the episodes report understandable speeches accompanied by pauses, as if they were actually talking to other people.

Talking in sleep: how it manifests itself and how to limit the episodes

Sleep talking, it should be stressed, does not cause major problems. Rarely, those who suffer from it complain of insomnia or excessive sleepiness during the day. To notice it are the parents when it comes to children and the partner in the case of adults, who are awakened by the monologue or by the phrases of the 'sleeper'. To limit the episodes of somniloquism, a series of measures can be implemented that seem quite effective.

First of all, it is recommended to eat light meals before going to sleep and to do some physical activity during the day. Try to have a strict sleep routine, always going to bed and waking up at the same times. If possible, avoid coffee and alcohol and the use of electronic devices after 8pm. Finally, also pay attention to the mattress and pillows, which must never be too soft or rigid and changed/sanitized with a certain regularity.
