Tile cake

Tile cake

Among the desserts of Emilia Romagna, the tile cake is one of the best known and most appreciated. Here's how to prepare it with the original recipe.

The tile cake is one of those desserts that even the less experienced can prepare without too much fear. Ideal to serve as a snack, during a birthday party or as a dessert at the end of a meal , it can be made in less than an hour. It is an excellent spoon dessert to be enjoyed cold and, once the butter cream has been prepared, the bulk of the work is done.

Also known as a brick cake, the tile cake takes inspiration from a typical dessert from Emilia Romagna prepared with biscuits soaked in coffee and interspersed with butter cream. Similar in procedure to tiramisu , it is however prepared with dry biscuits (and not with ladyfingers) and is ideal to prepare if you are looking for desserts without an oven . Preparation

How to prepare the tile cake recipe

1

Start by placing the soft butter cut into cubes in a bowl. Then add the icing sugar and with an electric whisk or a planetary mixer fitted with a wire whisk, whip the mixture until it becomes frothy.

2

Add the egg yolks one at a time, always with the machine running and waiting for the previous one to be absorbed before continuing. Your butter cream is ready.

3

Separately, mix the coffee with the Cointreau . If you prepare it for children, choose decaffeinated coffee and omit the liqueur or simply use milk.

4

Now all you have to do is assemble the dessert. Line a mold measuring approximately 20cm x 20cm with cling film and spread a layer of biscuits soaked in coffee on the bottom. Then cover some butter cream and repeat the layers until you have used up the ingredients. Finally, decorate with a sprinkling of bitter cocoa .

5

Let the dessert rest in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving , removing it from the mold using the cling film.

Here is a short video with all the steps to make it.

We have proposed the original recipe for the tile cake but keep in mind that it is also possible to prepare it using, instead of the butter cream, the certainly lighter custard (as well as "cooked" and therefore safer for consumption).

Conservation

This dessert will keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Bring it to room temperature for at least 30 minutes before serving.
