Loved all year round, with seasonal or exotic fruit, who doesn't go crazy for fresh fruit salad? Here is our version and some pairing advice.

If we talk about fruit salad, there are essentially two rules to follow: color and freshness. Exactly, the color is important to make your bowl inviting and to eat with the eyes , but then we move on to the flavor and here is where freshness comes into play. It is important that the fruit used among the ingredients is freshly taken (directly from your personal garden or from the greengrocer) then the rest comes by itself! Are you ready for this non- trivial adventure ? Here is the basic recipe and all the secrets for a perfect fruit salad.

How to make fruit salad

  1. First, wash the fruit thoroughly under cold running water, dry it well and set it aside.
  2. Peel and cut the kiwi, peach, banana and blood orange into cubes, then proceed by removing the stalk and cutting the fresh strawberries into slices.
  3. Let's take a bowl and pour all the fruit into it: kiwis, strawberries, orange, banana, peach, grapes and blueberries.
  4. At this point, add the brown sugar (or granulated sugar to taste) and the juice of one lemon.
  5. Mix well and leave to macerate in the refrigerator for at least ten minutes .
  6. Bring the fruit to the table, portion the fruit into small bowls and serve it to the diners with the addition of a mint leaf for each.

Variations and combinations

As we have already anticipated, there are many recipes for delicious and sugary fruit salads. We have explained how to make the classic one with sugar and lemon , however there are also other preparations (equally simple) that you can try to make.

  • Natural fruit salad . No lemon and absolutely zero sugar. This version won't be special, however it allows you to enjoy the flavor of the fruit to the fullest. After cutting it and mixing it in a large bowl, cover it with transparent film and leave it in the fridge for about 30 minutes so that the juices mix together. Give it one more turn and then serve it. Natural and without added sugar.
  • Proper Macedonia. A particular version of fruit salad, and not for every day, is the correct one. After cutting all the ingredients and adding the sugar, omit the lemon and pour a drop of whiskey, or even brandy or limoncello (but don't overdo it ). Leave to macerate for about 10 minutes and then serve.
  • Fruit salad with ice cream. Especially in the warm seasons, but not only, a nice scoop of ice cream paired with fruit salad is perfect to satiate any craving. With fruit, choose light flavors that do not cover the taste such as cream, vanilla, fiordilatte or cream.

The secrets of Primo Chef

If you already know more than the devil to get a perfect fruit salad, this paragraph will seem obvious and uninteresting. However, we want to share with you some precautions that we have learned over time and which could be useful in making the recipe .

As a very first step, the advice is to choose BIO fruit , without the use of pesticides and of which you can therefore taste the peel. Otherwise you should always remove it and this will greatly affect the nutrients (vitamins are mainly in the peel for many types of fruit) and also on the textures of the final product which will be much "softer" and less inviting.

Another secret we want to share with you is… how to prevent fruit salad from turning black . We're not going to tell you all the tactics , we're just revealing that you don't necessarily have to add lemon juice, pineapple juice works too!


The fruit salad should be consumed at the moment, as soon as it is ready and after a few minutes to macerate with the lemon. You can keep it in the refrigerator for up to half a day and, if you want to offer it at an outdoor picnic , we recommend placing it in a thermal bag with a block of ice nearby. We do not recommend freezing.
