diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies

Dementia with Lewy bodies is a rather rare and still unknown form of dementia. Let's find out everything there is to know about it.

When we talk about dementia with Lewi bodies we mean a form of disease very similar to Alzheimer's syndrome but which must still be recognized for its differences.
The treatments are in fact very different, which is why knowing it is essential.
Unfortunately it is a disease that is currently incurable and tends to appear after the age of 60 .
So let's try to get to know it better and figure out how to recognize it.

The causes and symptoms of dementia with Lewy bodies

Let's start by saying that this particular form of dementia, similar to that of Alzheimer's, is formed due to protein deposits in the brain. However, these appear in a different form, accumulating in distinct areas and thus allowing both diseases to be recognized as different from each other. To date, it is not yet clear why these protein deposits form. However, it has emerged that in some cases it is possible to contract both forms of dementia.

Going to the symptoms, these are mostly related to the decline of the mental faculties and mostly concern the spirit of initiative, the ability to organize oneself, the sense of direction, the ability to adapt, etc … Other symptoms may also occur concomitantly such as movement disorders, hallucinations, depression, sleep disturbances, poor concentration and intolerance to some drugs.

It is interesting to note that, at least at the onset of the disease , memory is not affected at all, deteriorating little by little. Since the symptoms also include movement disorders, this disease is also considered similar to Parkinson's disease in some ways. However, there is no risk of confusing them as the symptoms appear in reverse since in dementia with Lewy bodies motor problems appear only after those related to dementia.
Speaking of analogies, however, as happens to those suffering from Alzheimer's disease, awareness alternates with moments of unconsciousness.

Diagnosis and treatment of dementia with Lewi bodies

This form of dementia, being rare, has always been little known.
However, since it was Monica Vitti 's illness, she was often mentioned in the last year, thus becoming better known.
As for the diagnosis, this can be difficult to carry out above all because of the similarity with Alzheimer's. However, thorough examinations can help to recognize it and distinguish it from the first

The cure, however, to the reason does not exist. However, it is possible to slow down its evolution by administering mild antipsychotics. To this are added various types of therapies , including cognitive and behavioral therapies. Since it is a form of dementia which, at least for the moment, can only be slowed down, it is important to recognize it immediately, requesting the help of a doctor even in the face of the first suspicions.
Only in this way will it be possible to intervene in time and obtain all the indispensable support to deal with it in the best possible way.
