Gelo di watermelon alla siciliana or gelo di melone (you can also say mellone) is a dessert after a meal that certainly cannot be missed in the summer: a triumph of freshness and goodness!

To take advantage of the abundance of watermelons we advise you to prepare a fantastic Sicilian watermelon gelo. In fact, in summer you certainly cannot ignore watermelon, the most thirst-quenching fruit there is (besides the fact that it is also rich in fibre)! In Sicily then preparing the gelo di anguria, a kind of sweet watermelon jelly, is a tradition that has its roots very far back in time. This dessert is also called, more and more often, gelo di melone or mellone but don't be fooled by the term… watermelon is always used!

Also known as gelo di mellone, it is a quick and easy dessert to make, because it requires very little cooking and a handful of ingredients. Let's see together the recipe for watermelon frosting!

Preparation of melon frost

  1. First, carefully pit the watermelon, making sure there are no seeds.
  2. Put the watermelon pulp (it must be ripe and sweet) in a blender and blend it . Pass the fruit puree obtained through the meshes of a sieve, so that only the juice can be obtained.
  3. In a saucepan, mix the corn starch with the granulated sugar. Gradually pour the filtered watermelon juice into this mixture.
  4. Leave to thicken over low heat, then pour into single-portion moulds, for example silicone moulds. Let cool first at room temperature and then in the fridge, preferably for half a day.
  5. Spill the frost and decorate, if you like, with chocolate chips and grains.

Gelo di mellone: ​​history of the dessert

As we anticipated, gelu di muluni was born in Sicily where it is traditionally prepared on August 15th . The word mellone derives from the Italianization of muluni , watermelon in the Sicilian dialect.

Like many other traditional recipes, it has many variations. In fact, you can decorate the watermelon frosting with hazelnuts, dark chocolate , pistachios and whatever you like best, for a presentation in grand style.


This fresh and light sweet can be kept for a maximum of 1-2 days in the refrigerator, well covered by the transparent film in contact. We do not recommend freezing in the freezer in order not to alter its consistency.
