Tuna onions

Tuna onions are a very easy and versatile recipe: excellent to serve as an appetizer, for an aperitif or a buffet.

Do you want a tasty appetizer that is simple to make and can satisfy everyone? Tuna onions are right for you because they are perfect to serve as an appetizer with croutons or in combination with dishes richer in meat or fish.

After cooking the onions in boiling water, all you have to do is season them with a tasty sauce based on tuna, mayonnaise, parsley and anchovies in oil, just as is traditionally done for the veal with tuna sauce which inspires this preparation.

For this recipe you can use either red, white or golden onions depending on your tastes or what you have available. The strong flavor of the onions lends itself well to that of the sauce and for this reason you just have to get to work to taste this dish immediately. Here's the recipe!

Preparation of tuna onions

  1. First of all, peel the onions, rinse them and cut them into thin slices (you can use a mandolin to help you).
  2. Place the onions in a pan and cover with cold water, add a few spoons of vinegar (3-4 will be enough) and a pinch of salt and cook for 10-15 minutes .
  3. Then drain them well, pat them dry and let them cool.
  4. Take the tuna and drain it from the preservation liquid, then transfer it into the mixer.
  5. Add the drained anchovy fillets, some capers and parsley (optional) then run the appliance until you obtain a homogeneous mixture .
  6. Add the mayonnaise and mix to obtain a smooth cream which you will pour over the onions (previously placed in a bowl).
  7. Mix well then cover the bowl with cling film. Place in the refrigerator and let rest for at least an hour before serving .

Naturally, the tuna sauce can be customized to your liking: there are those who add a little mayonnaise and prefer a slightly "drier" cream, while others prepare it lighter and creamier. Then be careful with salt, we do not recommend adding any to the tuna sauce as both capers and anchovies are present.
